今天的英语角话题包括：
话题一. Learning Time:
古人說, "仁者樂山, 智者樂水" 我覺得老美一定是智者多過於仁者. 美國人的休閒活動很多是跟水離不開關係的, 只要夏天一到, 沖浪的沖浪, 划船的划船, 還有游泳那更不必說了. 去了幾次老美的 party, 大家喝完啤酒, 就直接跳到游泳池去消暑, 真是好不快樂啊! 這篇筆記就是我跟老美玩了幾次水下來得到的心得.
1. I need to take my bathing suit.
我要去拿我的游泳衣.
有次問老美要不要一起去游泳, 她說好, 但是她要回去拿 bathing suit. 我心想, 又不是去洗澡為什麼要拿浴袍呢? 後來才知道, bathing suit 看來像是指浴袍, 但其實就是 swimming suit 的意思, 不要忘了. 也有人把泳衣說成 bath suit 或是 swim suit.
我看老美玩水大概是多於真正游泳的時間, 所以男生的泳褲都是那種短褲型的, 而不是像國內賣的那種貼身型的. 第一次跟他們去玩水, 我把我從台灣帶來的泳褲給穿出去. 哇! 感覺真不好意思, 那種感覺就像是在台灣有個女生穿個三點式的去游泳, 大家都會對她行注目禮一樣.
2. Can you pass me the sunblock?
能不能拿防曬油給我.
我認識的這群老美很喜歡在烤完肉, 喝完啤酒後就跑去游泳池玩水. 那次大家一起去玩水, 我就一直聽到 sunblock 這個字, 我不懂但卻又不好意思問, 等了半天, 我才知道他們說的 sunblock 原來指的就是防曬油的意思. 附帶一個小插曲, 我覺的美國的女孩子好大方喔! 你背後防曬油擦不到, 她們還會主動為你服務說. 而且還擦得蠻仔細的喔! 害小笨霖回家後都捨不得洗澡. 哈哈.
3. You have a nice suntan.
你曬的很棒.
老美是很喜歡曬太陽的, 在我們宿舍的草皮上常可以看到金髮美女自己在地上鋪一塊布在那裏煎白魚. 實在是蔚為奇觀. 看到有人曬成古銅色的肌膚, 你就可以跟他說, "You have a nice suntan." 但要是曬到都脫皮了, 則是 sunburn 又不一樣喔. Tan 這個字可單獨當動詞或形容詞用, 例如, "I am tanned." 就是我曬黑了. "You have a nice tan skin." 就是說你的皮膚曬的很棒. 還有你可以用 grab a tan 來表示出去曬太陽, 例如, "I love to hit the beach and grab a tan." 至於形容曬黑的程度, 則可以用 "I have light/medium/dark tan skin."
在美國有一種很奇怪的行業叫 bodies tanning. 我一開始拿到他們的傳單 (flyer) 時我還以為是那種三溫暖之類的行業, 後來我才知道原來這是那種利用室內的紫外線燈, 把皮膚給曬黑的一種服務, 聽來是不是很不可思議呢?
4. I got plummy.
我的手起皺紋了.
大家應該都有這樣的經驗吧! 在水裏泡太久了, 手上就會起皺紋, 這個英文要怎麼說? 就是, "I got plummy." 或是 "I am plummy." Plummy 這個字是 plum (李子) 這個字的形容詞, 大概是說手跟李子表面一樣皺皺的, 所以才說 plummy 吧!
5. Who is the man in the middle?
誰當鬼啊?
那天的 party 還玩了個小遊戲, 一個人當鬼, 其他人傳球不能給鬼搶到. 我就很好奇說, 英語中誰當鬼那個"鬼"要怎麼說? 我想不會是 ghost 吧! 我仔細聽他們提到"鬼" 時, 用的就是 man in the middle 還有一種說法是用在玩捉迷藏時, 誰當鬼你可以說 "Who is it?" 那個 it 就是鬼的意思. 又比如說你說 "You are it!" 就是你當鬼啦.. 的意思. 好玩吧.
6. I just can't hang on to it.
我就是抓不住它.
那天玩那個遊戲基本上就是要去搶球, 但是由於球很滑, 所以很難抓得住. 有一個老美就說了, "I just can hang on to it!." 在我的理解中, 抓住應該是 hold on to it 才對, 而 hang 是 "吊著" 的意思. 後來回家來翻字典, 才知道原來 hang 也有抓住的意思, 這也就是說, hold on to it 和 hang on to it. 是可以互換使用的.
7. Do you know how to do the free style?
你知不知道怎麼游自由式?
大家應該都知道游泳有四式吧? 這四式分別要怎麼說呢? 就是 free style (自由式), breast stroke (蛙式), back stroke (仰式), 跟 butterfly (蝶式).
8. If you have a boat in summer, you are the man.
如果你夏天時能有艘船的話, 你就真正的男人!
這句話是我聽一個美女跟一個美男(美國的男人)講的, 這也多多少少反映出一些美國的真實情況, 這句話如果搬到台灣的話, 我想說成 If you have a car, you are the man 會更適合一點. 在美國大家都有車, 誰也不稀罕誰, 這時有船的人才是真正的老大.
老美說 "You are the man." 是指你很厲害的意思, 這句話不一定要對男生說, 對女生說也可以. 例如車子無法發動, 大家都不知道怎麼辦才好, 這時忽然有一個女生跳出來把車子給發動了, 你也可以對她說, "Hey, you are the man!"
9. Mossy Mossy
到處都是青苔.
青苔的英文叫 moss, 如果地上長滿了青苔, 可以用形容詞 mossy 來形容. 有一次我們去河邊玩水, 河床上長滿了滑滑的青苔, 我的朋友就說 mossy mossy, 我還以為他們在說日本話呢!, (日語中的 Hello 聽起來跟 mossy mossy 很像吧!) 後來才知道形容長滿青苔的, 就是 mossy 這個字
10. Do you know how to skip stone?
你知不知道如何打水漂?
打水漂大家會吧? 就是把一塊扁平的石頭平平的丟出去, 讓它在水面上彈跳, 在英文裏就是 skip stone. 我還聽過另一種說法, 叫 skip water. 我想二種說法都可以吧. 打水漂在英文裏還有一個正式的單字, 叫 ricochet. 但是好像比較少人用.

Never put water down the drain when there may be another use for it such as watering a plant or garden, or cleaning.
Verify that your home is leak-free, because many homes have hidden water leaks. Read your water meter before and after a two-hour period when no water is being used. If the meter does not read exactly the same, there is a leak.
Repair dripping faucets by replacing washers. If your faucet is dripping at the rate of one drop per second, you can expect to waste 2,700 gallons per year which will add to the cost of water and sewer utilities, or strain your septic system.
Check for toilet tank leaks by adding food coloring to the tank. If the toilet is leaking, color will appear within 30 minutes. Check the toilet for worn out, corroded or bent parts. Most replacement parts are inexpensive, readily available and easily installed. (Flush as soon as test is done, since food coloring may stain tank.)
Avoid flushing the toilet unnecessarily. Dispose of tissues, insects and other such waste in the trash rather than the toilet.
Take shorter showers. Replace you showerhead with an ultra-low-flow version. Some units are available that allow you to cut off the flow without adjusting the water temperature knobs.
Use the minimum amount of water needed for a bath by closing the drain first and filling the tub only 1/3 full. Stopper tub before turning water. The initial burst of cold water can be warmed by adding hot water later.
Don't let water run while shaving or washing your face. Brush your teeth first while waiting for water to get hot, then wash or shave after filling the basin.
Retrofit all wasteful household faucets by installing aerators with flow restrictors.
Operate automatic dishwashers and clothes washers only when they are fully loaded or properly set the water level for the size of load you are using.
When washing dishes by hand, fill one sink or basin with soapy water. Quickly rinse under a slow-moving stream from the faucet.
Store drinking water in the refrigerator rather than letting the tap run every time you want a cool glass of water.
Do not use running water to thaw meat or other frozen foods. Defrost food overnight in the refrigerator or by using the defrost setting on your microwave.
Kitchen sink disposals require lots of water to operate properly. Start a compost pile as an alternate method of disposing food waste instead of using a garbage disposal. Garbage disposals also can add 50% to the volume of solids in a septic tank which can lead to malfunctions and maintenance problems.
Consider installing an instant water heater on your kitchen sink so you don't have to let the water run while it heats up. This will reduce heating costs for your household.
. Insulate your water pipes. You'll get hot water faster plus avoid wasting water while it heats up.
Never install a water-to-air heat pump or air-conditioning system. Air-to-air models are just as efficient and do not waste water.
Install water softening systems only when necessary. Save water and salt by running the minimum amount of regenerations necessary to maintain water softness. Turn softeners off while on vacation.
Check your pump. If you have a well at your home, listen to see if the pump kicks on and off while the water is not in use. If it does, you have a leak.
When adjusting water temperatures, instead of turning water flow up, try turning it down. If the water is too hot or cold, turn the offender down rather than increasing water flow to balance the temperatures.
If the toilet flush handle frequently sticks in the flush position, letting water run constantly, replace or adjust it.
话题三：英文游戏:猜猜看;
话题四:上次带老外去鼓浪屿。
这次当然不能错过去环岛路。请至少说出以下的意思：
1）环岛路全程31公里，路宽44～60米，为双向6车道.
2）在旅游界中，有3s的提法，即阳光、沙滩、海水。厦门的环岛路刚好全部符合。
3）每年三月份环岛路都要举力一个国际马拉松赛。而这个赛道被称为世界上最美丽的赛道。
4）环岛路上有一个牌子：一国两制，统一中国；对面的大担岛上也有一个牌子：三民主义，统一中国
5）在环岛路上比较有意思，如果你的手机是全球通，可能会显示“台湾大哥大”或者“中华电信”。金门人可以听厦门的电台。厦门也有不少人听金门的YES RADIO(一个广播）；
6）厦门的方言是闽南语。
